With deepest sorrow, we would like to let you know that one of the founders of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Hong Kong Association, Dr Patricia IP Lai Sheung, BBS passed away peacefully at home on 24 August 2023.
Dr Ip had all along been dedicated to serving the community of Hong Kong and made significant contributions to humanitarian causes, notably the protection of children’s rights and promotion of breastfeeding.
With extensive knowledge and insightful leadership, Dr Ip initiated breastfeeding education for health professionals since the early 1990’s; participated actively and worked closely with the Department of Health in drafting the Hong Kong Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes from 2010 to 2017, as a member of a special taskforce; as well as represented the Association in responding to enquiries, receiving media interviews and writing to newspaper editors on all matters related to breastfeeding throughout the years. She had been a member of the Health Bureau’s Committee on Promotion of Breastfeeding since 2014 and a long-time member of the Hospital Authority’s Steering Committee on Breastfeeding.
Dr Ip was a staunch advocate, visionary leader, and wise mentor who masterminded the formal programme of Baby-Friendly Health Facilities Designation for both hospitals and maternal and child health centres. She was also a great friend and a valuable role model for all who had worked with her. Her contributions to promoting breastfeeding and protecting infant health had laid the enduring foundation for a thriving breastfeeding friendly community. Her great work will be remembered forever.
On behalf of BFHIHKA, we express our deepest sorrow over the passing of Dr Ip and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family.
The Family of Dr Ip would like to have a funeral for the immediate family to honour her memory.
